OCM has completed numerous contaminated land assessments in Ireland and the UK. OCM personnel include registered auditors, environmental scientists, geologists and hydrogeologists, all of whom are experienced in environmental assessment. The need to assess contaminated lands can arise from the discovery of historic waste disposal sites, or proposals to develop sites on which current or historic activities had the potential to cause contamination. The main concern is the risk to the environment and the health and safety of construction workers, neighbours and future occupants. The assessments may involve the phase I establishment of a site history to identify the potential for historic activities to impact on the site, a site inspection and a reconnaissance to identify potential sensitive receptors or other activities that could impact on the site. |
The information obtained is used to design a phase II investigation programme to establish the presence and significance of any contamination and forms the basis for the assessment of risks and to develop remedial measures. Each programme is site specific but can include installation of trial pits and boreholes, collection and analysis of soil, surface water and groundwater samples and a soil vapour or landfill gas survey. Where possible the environmental investigation is completed in conjunction with the geo-technical investigations to minimise costs. The investigation results are assessed in the context of site-specific conditions and relevant guidelines. Measures to avoid or minimise risk can be prepared for inclusion into the site development design. |
